What every portfolio website needs

Whatever you do, a good portfolio answers four questions in the first minute: who are you, what have you done, is it any good, and how do I reach you.

  1. A clear first line. “Wedding photographer in Jaipur” beats “Capturing moments”. Say what you do and where.
  2. Case studies, not just pictures. For each project: the brief, what you did, and what changed. Numbers help: “62% fewer abandoned payments” is memorable.
  3. Proof from other people. Two or three short quotes from clients, teachers or managers.
  4. Prices or a way to estimate them. Clients in India often leave without asking. A “from ₹” price or a small estimator keeps them talking to you.
  5. A contact form that reaches you where you are. For most freelancers in India that's WhatsApp. Every template here prepares the enquiry and sends it on WhatsApp or by email, with no server needed.

The templates, one by one

Each one has nine pages, including a work page with filters, a case study page for every project, services with a cost estimator, and a contact form. Open any of them to preview the whole site before you download.

What to show, by profession

Developers

Link to live projects and GitHub, but explain them too: the problem, your role, the stack and the result. Recruiters and clients rarely read code; they read outcomes like “checkout 38% faster”. A short “stack” page with years of experience answers the usual first question.

UI/UX and product designers

Show your thinking, not just final screens: who you talked to, what you learnt and what you changed. A before and after is the fastest way to show impact.

Photographers

Fewer, better photos. A tight gallery of 15 to 25 frames, then full stories for a few weddings or shoots. Couples want to know price and availability early, so show packages and let them check a date.

Interior designers and architects

Plans, materials and before and after photos, with the budget and timeline for each project. Clients worry most about cost, so an estimate by BHK and finish level builds trust quickly.

Creators and influencers

Brands want numbers: followers, average views, engagement and who your audience is. Put them in a media kit with your rates, and show past campaigns with their results.

Students and freshers

Two or three projects explained well beat ten listed. Add hackathons, internships and a resume recruiters can download in one click.

How to put your portfolio online for free

  1. Download a template and open the folder. Replace the name, the projects (in assets/js/portfolio.js) and the contact details.
  2. Check it on your phone. Open index.html in a browser, then try it at phone size. Most of your visitors will be on a phone.
  3. Upload it to a free host. GitHub Pages, Netlify and Cloudflare Pages all host static HTML sites free. On Netlify you can drag the folder onto the page.
  4. Add your own domain (optional). A .in or .com domain costs about ₹500 to ₹1,600 a year and looks far more professional than a free subdomain.
  5. Share one link everywhere: your email signature, LinkedIn, Instagram bio and resume.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Too many projects. Your weakest project sets the bar. Cut it.
  • No context. A screenshot without the problem and result doesn't tell anyone why it was hard.
  • Hiding how to contact you. Put a contact button in the header of every page.
  • Slow pages. Huge images on a 4G phone lose visitors. Resize photos before uploading.
  • Out-of-date work. Update your portfolio every few months, and remove the sample content before you share it.

Questions people ask

Can I make a portfolio website for free?

Yes. Download a free HTML template, replace the sample text and projects with your own, and host it free on GitHub Pages, Netlify or Cloudflare Pages. The only optional cost is your own domain, about ₹500 to ₹1,600 a year.

Which is the best website to make a portfolio?

Behance, Dribbble and LinkedIn are good for being discovered, but you don't control them. Your own portfolio website, on your own domain, is the one link that always shows your best work first. Most people use both.

Do I need to know coding to use an HTML portfolio template?

Not much. You edit text in the HTML files and your projects in one data file. Any text editor works. If you'd rather not, a setup service can put it live for you.

What should I put in my portfolio?

Three to six of your best projects, each with the problem, what you did and the result; a short about section; and a clear way to contact you. Quality beats quantity.

How many projects should a portfolio have?

Three to six strong projects. A hiring manager or client spends a few minutes on your site, so show the work you most want more of.

Is a portfolio website useful for students and freshers?

Very. A simple site with two or three college or hackathon projects and a downloadable resume stands out from a PDF alone, and gives recruiters something to click.

Can someone set up my portfolio website for me?

Yes. Hyklates templates are free, and Hykvra can put one live with your projects on your own domain, from ₹4,999 including the domain and first-year hosting.
